INSTRUMENT INVENTORS INITIATIVE AND JOURNEY THROUGH THE SENSES PRESENT

"NOT TO BE SENSELESS 5"

‘Not to be Senseless’ is a stage for neurodivergent art with people and pieces that experience and explore neurodivergencies such as synaesthesia, savantism and autism. This accessible event opens up new perspectives by recognising differences in how we sense the world. Organized by iii in collaboration with Journey Through the Senses, curated by Maria Oosterveen.

The theme of this evening is Sound and Color.

Playtronica will perform with Orbita, an instrument where sound and color come together in a playful and synaesthetic way. They will also do a talk on how synesthesia has inspired them to start Playtronica and with developing new playful instruments. ULTRAX, by TeZ, is a spatial moving installation where sound and color come together in your mind. There will then be a screening of the short documentary ‘Sound & Color’ by Alissa Fagin, that follows the process of artist Sarah Kraning’s visual experience of sound.

Orbita is a tactile music sequencer that brings creativity back to your fingertips. Using colorful magnets as notes, it transforms music-making into an intuitive, hands-on experience – no screens, no complex software, just pure fun. Playtronica will showcase Orbita by performing with this fun and synesthetic instrument. This will be followed up by a talk/presentation by Sasha Pas, from Playtronica, on why they started Playtronica and how being a synesthete has inspired them to create the playful instruments they developed.

Maurizio Martinucci

Maurizio Martinucci (aka TeZ) is an Italian interdisciplinary artist and independent researcher, living and working in Amsterdam. He uses technology as a means to explore perceptual effects and the relationship between sound, light and space. He focuses primarily on generative compositions with spatialized sound for live performances and installations.

ULTRAX, aims to create a technological apparatus and the sonic content for a hyper-immersive sound and light installation and performance. This installation will explore the interplay of 3D Ambisonics, directional ultrasonic sound beams, and light stimuli, crafting an immersive synesthetic experience that resonates deeply with the audience’s sensory perceptions.

Alissa Fagin

Alissa Fagin has been producing documentaries since 2019 on award-winning projects for Hulu, HBO, Vice, Netflix, and Prime Video. Before working in production, she developed films at Academy Award-winning Alex Gibney’s production company, Jigsaw Productions. Sound & Color is the culmination of years of research and a deep fascination with synesthesia.

Sound & Color is a work in progress documentary that follows the process of animating synesthesia artist Sarah Kraning’s visual experience of sound. Through its nuanced and emotional exploration of Sarah’s mind, the film contemplates neurodiversity, subjective perception, and art’s role in transforming personal experience into something universal.
