Join us on Wednesday, 20th November 2024, at t Ladbroke Hall for Sounds of Us UK, a groundbreaking, immersive live performance by The Venus Bushfires (Helen Epega). This unique experience weaves together British and African stories through an exquisite fusion of music, culture, art, and sensory exploration.
Helen Epega, experiences musical notes as colours (a form of synesthesia) and she brings her creative process to the forefront of Sounds of Us UK. As the audiesnce listens to the ethereal sounds of the hang, African percussion, Western classical instruments, and meditative vocals, you will be invited to reflect your emotional responses visually. Using the pastels and canvas provided, you’ll paint in real time, translating your personal experience of the music into vibrant artwork that reflects both individual and collective creativity.
In collaboration with Journey Through The Senses and supported by the PRS Foundation Composer’s Fund, this event offers a rare opportunity to engage deeply with music and art. Helen’s synesthesia-inspired performance will guide you through a powerful sensory journey, immersing you in a world where sound, sight and feeling dance together.Â
Doors open at 6pm, with the performance running from 7pm to 8:30pm at Ladbroke Hall, offering a stunning setting for this transformative celebration of storytelling, culture, and connection.
The evening will begin with a talk by James Wannerton (President of Journey Through the Senses and UKSA). James will explore the wonders of synaesthesia and take questions from attendees.

Helen Epega (The Venus Bushfires)

Helen Epega aka The Venus Bushfires, is a Nigerian-British composer, performer, and visual artist who bridges diverse cultures through her unique approach to expressive arts, influenced by her experience with synesthesia. Her seminal work, Song Queen: A Pidgin Opera, is the world’s first opera of its kind. She has created music for Sony PlayStation and Disney, with her work featured by BBC, CNN, The Guardian, New York Times and Vice Magazine. In 2008, she founded the Just A Day initiative, facilitating expressive arts workshops globally, allowing different communities to share ideas in meaningful ways. In 2021, she exhibited her multidisciplinary work, Sounds of Us – A Sound Art Snapshot, reflecting life during pandemic lockdown at the Her Dark Materials exhibition. Helen was nominated for an #OFFIE Award in 2022 for Best Idea in Design and Sound for the production #confinement.
