TOUCH
The touch sense—also called tactile sensation—allows humans to perceive physical contact with objects and environments, including pressure, vibration, temperature, pain, and texture through specialized skin receptors.
Signals begin with activation of various cutaneous receptors in the skin when mechanical, thermal, or chemical stimuli occur. These receptors generate nerve impulses that travel via sensory nerves into the spinal cord, then to the thalamus and somatosensory cortex, where the brain decodes the signals into recognizable sensations like softness, roughness, pain, or warmth. Areas with more densely packed receptors (such as fingertips and lips) have much greater tactile sensitivity.
The sense of touch is vital for:
Recognizing and safely interacting with objects (grip, position, texture, size).
Warning about harmful stimuli (pain response).
Social interactions, emotional bonding, and non-verbal communication.
Motor skills and coordination.
